ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY
The aim of the course is to give the participants a brief introduction to the most common methodologies used in archaeology within a general framework of Roman history. As a result the participants will find themselves in contact with the customs and traditions of Ancient Rome. The course is divided in eight lessons, each lasting three hours.

Programme

First Lesson
• Historical-archaeological outline of the territory of Rome: general introduction to archaeology, identification of archaeological sites, methods of excavation.
• Rome: the origins, the Republic, the Empire.

Second Lesson
• Imperial Rome: topography and location of the principle archaeological sites found in the present urban area.

Third Lesson
• Visit to the Foro Romano.

Fourth Lesson
- Roman building techniques.
• Material Culture.


Fifth Lesson
• Ostia: a magnificent example of Roman construction techniques.

Sixth Lesson
• The Necropolis: chronological differences, excavations.

Seventh Lesson
• Restoration techniques: treatment of skeletons, the figure of the anthropologist, treatment of funeral remains.

Eight Lesson
• Visit to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Romano.

ITALIAN ART
Rome is an unparalleled repository of monuments from all periods. Great architectural structures, unforgettable avenues, breathless sculptures, naturalistic wonders of the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque, all these have left their mark on the Rome we see today. Every lesson lasts 3 hours. Slides and information hand-outs are provided together with booklets on the subjects dealt with.

Programme

First Lesson
• The legacy of the Roman Period and its symbols: the triumphal arch, the column...
• The structure of the Forum and its influence on world culture.

Second Lesson
• The Medieval period: churches and their masterpieces.
• The importance of mosaics; the legacy of a family of artists in 13th century Rome, the Cosmati.

Third Lesson
• Visit to little known places concerning Medieval Rome.

Fourth Lesson
• The birthplace of the Renaissance.
• Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, painting
•The "perspective" - its influence on architects, artists and sculptors.


Fifth Lesson
•The urban policy of the Popes: the transformation of the city into a true Baroque city.
•The protagonists of the Baroque.


Sixth Lesson
• Visit to the principal courses of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, to discover the external space of an artwork, the visual and spatial correlation between points distant from each other: S. Giovanni, S. M. Maggiore, the Trident of Piazza del Popolo.

Seventh Lesson
• Neo-classic urban transformations.
• Modern art in Rome.

Eight Lesson
• Visit to the park at Villa Borghese to see an important example of "giardino romantico".
• Comments and feedback.

ITALIAN COOKING & WINE
Simple or elaborate, Italian cooking offers a variety of dishes to satisfy every palate, from the gourmet to the health-conscious, from those who eat standing up to those who spend hours at table. The vast variety of typical Italian products - the countless kinds and shapes of pasta, the various types of pizza together with meat, fish, vegetables, olive oil and and the world renowned Italian wine - all contribute in making an Italian meal a special occasion. In each lesson, lasting three hours, the participants will acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge required to prepare some of the most representative regional dishes and to select the wines to accompany them.

First Lesson

Cucina del nord: Risotto alla milanese. Ossobuco alla milanese. Wine.

Second Lesson

Cucina del nord: Troffie al pesto. Fiori di zucca fritti. Panna cotta. Wine.

Third Lesson

Cucina del centro: Bucatini all'amatriciana. Abbacchio con carciofi. Wine.

Fourth Lesson

Cucina del centro: Tagliatelle alla bolognese. Involtini di vitello. Tiramisù. Wine.

Fifth Lesson

Cucina del sud: Orecchiette con cime di rape. Coniglio ai sottaceti. Wine.

Sixth Lesson

Cucina del sud: Spaghetti alle vongole. Cozze alla marinara. Pan di Spagna. Wine.

Seventh Lesson

Cucina delle isole: Ravioli di patate nuoresi. Vitello alla sarda. Wine.
