ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY
The aim of the course is to give the participants a brief introduction to the most common methodologies used in archaeology within a general framework of Roman history. As a result the participants will find themselves in contact with the customs and traditions of Ancient Rome. The course is divided in eight lessons, each lasting three hours.

Programme

First Lesson
• Historical-archaeological outline of the territory of Rome: general introduction to archaeology, identification of archaeological sites, methods of excavation.
• Rome: the origins, the Republic, the Empire.

Second Lesson
• Imperial Rome: topography and location of the principle archaeological sites found in the present urban area.

Third Lesson
• Visit to the Foro Romano.

Fourth Lesson
- Roman building techniques.
• Material Culture.


Fifth Lesson
• Ostia: a magnificent example of Roman construction techniques.

Sixth Lesson
• The Necropolis: chronological differences, excavations.

Seventh Lesson
• Restoration techniques: treatment of skeletons, the figure of the anthropologist, treatment of funeral remains.

Eight Lesson
• Visit to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Romano.
