Hundreds of writers, poets and artists of every period and every part of the world have celebrated its beauty, its colour, its art and its atmosphere laden with history.
But Rome is not only a city full of monuments, palaces and museums without equal in the world; it is also a modern city, full of life, offering pleasure and enjoyment for all tastes.

Describing Rome in a few words is not easy. Let's try then to say what Rome means to the people who live here and the crowds of people who come to visit every year.

Commonplaces about Rome

One of the most frequent commonplaces heard amongst people who have never been to Rome is that it is "a very big city".
Have a look at the maps below. The one on top shows the entire area of Greater Rome (including the suburbs) while the map below shows the historical centre. This area is the site of "Ancient Rome" and it was certainly pretty big in ancient times. But by today's standards it's rather small. This is the area where our students spend most of their time: the school is here, most students spend their spare time here, a lot of students have their accommodation here. That's why we like to call Rome a "great little jewel".
